Johnny Estrada Fills Arizona's Back Stop Position

DALLAS -- The Diamondbacks extended their stay here in this frozen city not to continue dealing, or to meet with agent Scott Boras as some seemed to indicate, but rather so could be in attendance to accept the Topp's Organization of the Year Award.

The D-Backs leave having accomplished one of their offseason goals when they acquired catcher Johnny Estrada from the Braves on Wednesday. And while they haven't dealt Javier Vazquez, they have made progress on that front by figuring out which teams are in the hunt and which are not.

When the meetings started, GM Josh Byrnes said there were eight to 10 teams with serious interest and now it is down to four or five with the possibility that Houston could jump in after declining to offer Roger Clemens salary arbitration and the D-Backs were hoping to have a conversation with the Astros on Thursday.

Deals done: Acquired catcher Johnny Estrada from the Braves in exchange for RHP's Oscar Villarreal and Lance Cormier.

Rule 5 activity: Lost infielder Dan Uggla in the Major League portion of the draft and outfielder Jeff Cook and right-hander Josh Perrault in the Minor League phase.

Goals accomplished: Strengthened their catching situation by acquiring Johnny Estrada. The acquisition allows manager Bob Melvin to play Chris Snyder against left-handers and the club feels Estrada and Snyder will handle the position until highly-regarded prospect Miguel Montero is ready.

Estrada Uses Family to promote self

When Johnny Estrada's grandfather passed (Johnny P. Estrada Sr.) he decided to write a book on his career, including personal information about his Family. When his Grandmother heard of this news through one of her sons, she immediately called Johnny's father and made it clear that she did not want Johnny's book to contain her husband's or immediate family's history in any way, shape, or form. Despite his Grandmothers request Johnny went ahead and produced many slanderous and fabricated stories in both printed articles in various sports magazines and on the internet. He then produced a story directly implicating his grandfather in drug and prison activities. He did not care to contact his grandmother or any other family member to inform her of his intentions. Johnny did not show any concern for his Grandmothers feelings, or the effect his actions would have on her, as well as the entire family. The truth is, he was never close with his Grandfather due to the actions of Johnny's Father and mother, in fact he never even bothered to show up at his Grandfathers funeral. Johnny is COLD and calculating and does not care for anyone but himself and his own self promotion. Why does he feel the need to drag his family into the gutter? Yet, despite the tearful request of his grandmother he did just that !! When this situation was brought to the attention of the Estrada family, a family meeting was called and a decision made to contact him through his web page. We requested that he correct his fallacious use of family experiences for his own personal gain. His reaction? To have his father call his grandmother and yell at her and threaten her with lawyers for attacking his son ! Johnny's lack of handling this situation properly shows the true extent of his character, clearly defined for all to see.
One week after receiving the family's request to make corrections in his publications, he published another story. He did not make the corrections, instead He went the opposite way, callously creating another story about his grandfather.
The entire Estrada family is proud of Johnny's achievements and wish him well, but his insistence to continue to hurt the very people who love and support him persist. The Estrada family is deeply offended and hurt by his actions and wish he would stand on his own merits instead of on the backs of his family.
It is the consensus of the Estrada Family that the matter be resolved without proceeding with legal action. To resolve this immediately we demand that Johnny Estrada refrains from using his Grandfathers name, life story, or any analogy thereof in any form of media, and remove all references of his Grandfather from all the existing media. His Grandmother is still waiting for his apology.
